What’s it Like to Catch a Tarpon?
There’s nothing quite like catching a tarpon. Some of these fish weigh over 200 pounds, so it’s perfectly possible to catch a monster tarpon right here in Clearwater. Tarpon fish essentially swim through the air as they jump, which is one of the reasons why they are a challenging (yet very rewarding!) catch.
You’ll see these fish flipping through the air going left, right, and upside down. They put up a fight like you’ve never seen. Luckily, an experienced and top rated charter Captain, like Brian Mathey, can show you the way to catch your own huge trophy tarpon.
Heads up! Be prepared for the following when fishing for tarpon:
- Average weight of 150 pounds during summer months but can reach 200+ lbs
- Bow to the silver king is a special technique for keeping them on the hook while they jump
- May take 1 hour or more to land

When’s the Best Time to Catch a Tarpon?
If you have your heart set on catching a tarpon, you must be mindful of the time of year. Some seasons are better for catching tarpon than others. With this in mind, it’s helpful to know their behavior and habits when planning your fishing trip.
Tarpons come to Clearwater in the summer to spawn. When they arrive, they are hungry! You’ll spot a lot of tarpons in our area from May to July. This is when they make their way north from the warm, southern waters.
- Tarpons migrate from south Florida, the Florida Keys, and even Cuba
- Spawning season is the perfect time for tarpon fishing
- Pre-spawning is done close to shore
